ABOUT ME

Hello! I’m a journalist based in Los Angeles, working primarily in audio. I’m currently a senior editor at NPR’s All Things Considered program, based at NPR West in Culver City.

One of the highlights of my career as a science journalist isn't a behind-the-scenes tour of the Large Hadron Collider, or being at NASA mission control for a space launch. No, it's far more mundane than any of that, and involves crawling on my hands and knees through Kansas prairie grasses, hunting for foot-deep holes with… poop inside.

I was out with a gang of fearless entomologists in search of dung beetles. They had planted the poop samples there earlier in the week, in hopes of attracting the bugs. And I can tell you that the squeals of entomologists when they spot their prey makes Very Good Tape. It was the joy of discovery and wonder — and it reminded me why I love telling science stories.

I am currently a senior editor at NPR’s afternoon news program, All Things Considered, where I write and edit breaking news and interviews with newsmakers, diplomats, scientists, musicians, and many of the other voices you hear on the air. I was an editor on NPR’s award-winning breaking news coverage of the January 6th insurrection and help spearhead science coverage on All Things Considered.

Some of my favorite stories include a census of bumblebees in coastal California, a tale of Joshua tree restoration efforts in the Mojave desert, and a profile of a legendary Asian-American bookstore in Berkeley, California.

Prior to my work at NPR, I spent a decade producing, directing and reporting for the public radio show Science Friday, a live interview show heard by two million listeners a week. While reporting for Science Friday, I skated on Olympic ice, explored caves and followed NASA astronaut hopefuls across Hawaiian lava beds. I was lead producer on the show’s national event series Science Friday Live! and pitched, developed and edited new podcast projects. I am also a longtime contributor to Scientific American, and regularly report for its podcast Science, Quickly.

Prior to becoming a journalist, I taught English to bankers and soldiers in Verona, Italy, and traversed the Sierra Nevada backcountry as a field biologist, on the lookout for mountain yellow-legged frogs.

I have a master's degree in science journalism from New York University, and a bachelor's degree in biology and Italian from the University of California, Berkeley. Get in touch.
